THE TECH CORNER

This page is for the people that they are interested to learn or get familiar with the work necessary to do in order to migrate from a PC running Windows XP (32-bit) to a Windows 7.

Most of us probably remember way back, migration from Win98 to Win 2000 and from Win 2000 to Win XP. Was messy, Windows registry and files system gets jammed with keys, settings and files that are not cleaned properly. Microsoft did not try to offer a direct upgrade from Win XP to Win 7, the same way that is offering for Win Vista.

Therefore in this page I will like to offer you, the simple and more logical way to proceed if you are planning to upgrade you PC to Win 7.

1)From the Microsoft Web main page, go to Popular Downloads, click on Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor. Before you download read the instructions and once you run this program, a report of issues founded in your computer will be generated in HTML format, you can save the report in your PC for future reference.

2)If you do not want to go through this exercise and you will like to buy a new PC already running Win 7, and you will like to transfer your files (Note: You cannot transfer application, you have to install as a new in your PC) follow the next step.

3)Microsoft provides a FREE tool called Windows Easy Transfer (WET). This program will move Data, media files and program settings (some) from your old PC to the new PC, via a USB Easy Transfer Cable.

4)When you run WET in your old PC, will scan the local drive. If you have many users in your PC, will do for each profile, data, etc. and you will be able to select what you will like to move (Desktop, My Doc, My Music, etc.)

5)To get WET go to Microsoft.com , Downloads, and search for Easy Transfer, you will get many files , pick for Windows XP(32-bits) to Win 7, and download to your PC and follow the instructions.

Now if you are willing to expend some money, I can suggest visiting the following site (http://www.laplink.com/pcmover), the company name is LapLink; they have a nice SW called PCmover and make it easier to move from Win XP to Win 7. PCmover is the ONLY migration utility that moves programs, files, and settings from your old PC to your new PC. Simply install PCmover on both your old and new computers and go! PCmover will determine which programs, files, and settings need to be moved, and when the transfer is complete, your new computer will have the functionality of your old PC as well as all of its own pre-installed software.
